can anyone give any advice as to foods he can eat to still build up? other than meat as he has been vegetarian for 16 years. Any help would be greappreciatediated. Thanks
None of these foods are required, and in fact it's good to avoid most of these. You can build muscles faster with dairy, but would you want to ingest bovine growth hormones at the risk of prostate cancer and other cancers? (T. Collin Campbell "The China Study")
Here are the foods that are high in protein:
+ Leafy greens (kale, collards, spinach) - High in iron, calcium, and protein. (spinach does not give up its calcium easily)
+ Whole grains (avoid wheat and other gluten grains)
+ Legumes (peas and sprouted or cooked beans) I prefer to avoid soy because it is flavorless and is processed with unhealthy additives.
Eat a combination of all three categories of food for complete protein. Animal proteins tend to create an acid condition in the blood which causes loss of calcium. A whole plant based diet is idea. Of course you should include fresh colorful vegetables and fruits in a diet. Both Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. and his son Rip were world class athletes competing on a vegan diet. Many body builders are on a whole plant based diet.
Pure vegetarians must watch to make sure that they consume enough B12, D, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamin D is best manufactured by the body from sunlight on the skin. B12 is stored in the body for three years and an occasional consumption of this vitamin is needed. Ground flax seed is an ideal source of Omega-3.
It's best to drink pure deep well water and avoid all commercial drinks (including alcohol, soda pop, caffeine, and even most bottled water in a plastic container).
Of course avoid MSG, aspartame, sugar (in all forms), salt, oil/fat, and food additives. Fresh whole plant based diet is ideal.
